A Legacy of Leadership: How Teymour Farhang’s Resilience and Entrepreneurial Spirit Shaped Dr. Donya Ball’s Path to Service and Success
In California, a father-daughter duo has made significant strides in the business and education sectors, their story a testament to humble beginnings, resilience, and relentless work ethic. Teymour Farhang and his daughter, Dr. Donya Ball, have each carved their paths to success, their journeys intertwined by shared values and mutual inspiration.
Teymour Farhang: From Iran to California
Teymour Farhang’s journey began in Tehran, Iran, where he was born in 1949. In 1965, his mother, Olia, a beautician, arranged for him to attend a boarding school near Los Angeles. At the age of 16, Teymour arrived in the United States, armed with fluent Farsi and very limited English. With a love for the Beatles and a determination to integrate into American society, Teymour’s life began again.
His first job at the Lawrence Broom Factory on his school’s campus paid $1.25 an hour. A year later, he secured a position as a groundskeeper, marking a significant step up. In 1968, Teymour moved to Visalia, California, which would become his forever home. After a series of odd jobs, including mowing lawns and working as a busboy, he graduated from Mt. Whitney High School and attended the College of the Sequoias. His hard work paid off when he eventually purchased Hungry Hoppy’s Restaurant, where he had previously worked as a cook.

Teymour’s entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop there. He opened a Hofbrau in Visalia and, after years in the restaurant business, transitioned to real estate in 1979. Over the next four decades, Teymour became a partner in a Coldwell Banker office and later purchased a Prudential Real Estate franchise, which eventually became an affiliate of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. His career in real estate brought not only financial success but also the opportunity to form lasting relationships with clients and colleagues. For Teymour, real estate has never been just a career over the past 45 years; it is his passion. He takes extreme pride and care in serving every client and agent as if they are his own family.
Dr. Donya Ball: Forging a Path from Lessons Learned
Donya Olia Farhang, now known as Dr. Donya Ball, was born in Visalia in 1978. She grew up immersed in activities like dance, gymnastics, playing the violin, and competitive swimming. Weekends were often spent running business errands with her dad, singing Beatles songs in the car, and sitting at open houses. Through these experiences, Donya became deeply involved in her father’s business, intently observing as he forged important relationships that led to closing deals.

Every “quick errand” with her father often turned into hours. Whenever he ran into someone he knew, it was never just a fast “hi and bye” but rather long, authentic conversations, delving into the other person’s life and well-being. Through these observations at a very young age, Donya learned the value of fully leaning into people—not just with like-minded individuals, but with anyone and everyone.
With an original aspiration to work in the advertising and marketing industry, Donya attended Pepperdine University, where she swam at the collegiate level for a few years. While in school, Donya juggled various jobs, from working in the campus mailroom to answering phones at the graduate business school, and even selling copy machines. Her summers were filled with giving swim lessons and being a lifeguard at city pools.
Inspired by her father’s ability to connect with the human heart of every person he interacted with, Donya knew she also had the gift of forging strong relationships and yearned to start a career in education where she could lean into service. Serving as a tutor at several Los Angeles area schools kick-started her career as a teacher, eventually leading to roles in school and district administration.
When Donya became a mother and climbed the leadership ladder, her father, Teymour, played a crucial role in her success. He dedicated much of his time to carpooling her three young children, taking them to their various after-school activities, babysitting at his office, and even watching them on weekends to give Donya a reprieve. He set up a kids’ loft in his office, where the children could stay after school or if they were sick, allowing Donya to fulfill her work commitments. This unwavering support for his daughter and love for his grandchildren enabled her to work full-time in various leadership roles, earn both master’s and doctorate degrees, all while raising children who have a strong bond with their grandfather to this day.
While Dr. Ball immersed herself in the world of leadership, she recognized a gap with traditional leadership development support. Drawing from her own personal and professional experiences and challenges including career triumphs and rejection, combined with her father’s entrepreneurial spirit, she set out to author two number-one release books and founded Dr. Ball LLC, offering innovative and practical leadership keynotes and workshops.
Dr. Ball’s keynotes are not just talks but transformative experiences designed to propel leaders to higher levels of success. Her sessions focus on innovative problem-solving and strategic leadership, helping executives turn adversities into strategic advantages. By fostering an environment of growth and resilience, she empowers leaders to reimagine their approach to challenges, ensuring they emerge stronger and more capable.
In addition to her keynotes, Dr. Ball’s podcast episodes and virtual leadership series tackle crucial topics such as navigating leadership during downturns, using criticism as a catalyst for success, conducting hiring and terminations with dignity, promoting inclusive organizational environments, and achieving a healthy work-life balance. Her practical solutions have helped numerous executives radically transform their operational strategies.
