EU foreign ministers to discuss Israel-Iran conflict on Tuesday

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has called a video conference of foreign ministers for Tuesday in view of the military escalation in the Middle East.

The meeting will provide an opportunity to exchange views and coordinate diplomatic efforts, a Kallas aide said in Brussels on Sunday. Possible next steps will also be discussed, he said.

“We believe that diplomacy must prevail,” Kallas said in a statement.

“The EU will continue to contribute to all diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and to find a lasting solution to the Iranian nuclear issue which can only be through a negotiated deal,” it sia.d

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul could play a special role in the video conference.

Wadephul has been travelling in the region in recent days amid the military escalation between Israel and Iran and has held talks in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman.
