German Interior Ministry questions moderation of new AfD youth group
Germany’s Interior Ministry sees no signs of moderation in the new youth organization of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), saying it shows strong continuity with its dissolved predecessor.
Responding to a question from a Green lawmaker, the ministry said in a statement that the leadership of the group, known as Generation Deutschland (GD), was largely made up of former officials and members of the AfD’s previous youth wing, the Junge Alternative (JA).
GD was founded in November 2025 after the JA was dissolved. Germany’s domestic intelligence agency had previously classified the JA as a proven right-wing extremist organization.
The ministry said it was aware of links between members of Generation Deutschland and other extremist organizations.
It added that statements made by board members at the group’s founding event indicated that the organization did not intend to moderate its political positions but rather to adhere to the same ideological content as its predecessor.
According to the Interior Ministry, remarks made at GD’s founding congress in November constituted concrete indications of efforts directed against Germany’s democratic constitutional order.
The ministry cited speeches that reflected an ethnic definition of the German nation and suggested demands for the legal discrimination of German citizens with a migration background, saying this underscored ideological continuity between the two groups.
Unlike the JA, Generation Deutschland is formally integrated into the AfD party structure. The AfD severed ties with the JA earlier in 2025 and had little control over the organization, whose repeated controversies damaged the party’s public image.
