Traveling with young kids is full of tiny victories, quiet chaos and moments that feel private until they suddenly are not. One mom’s ordinary bathroom break on a family trip to Japan turned into a split-second surprise that millions of parents instantly recognized themselves in.

“One of the best things about travelling to Japan was how the amenities were built for parents with young children,” Mya tells PEOPLE, explaining that bathrooms everywhere were thoughtfully designed with child seats. With her youngest daughter just 13 months old at the time, having a safe place to set her down made daily outings far easier.

That sense of ease followed her until a stop at Tokyo’s airport, where one restroom detail stood out for all the wrong reasons. Unlike others she’d seen, this bathroom had the child seat positioned directly beside the door — and its flashing open button.

As Mya sits down, her toddler is buckled into the seat while her older sister looks on. Then, in a moment that happens faster than she can react, the baby presses the button, opening the door to the general public.

“When she pressed the button to open it, which her older sister found hilarious, my immediate thought was relief that I had just that second pulled my pants up,” Mya says. The timing, she adds, could not have been closer.

The moment later appears in a TikTok she shares, where text across the screen reads, “when you’re sat on the toilet and your baby opens the door to the general public.”

Once the shock passes, Mya realizes the moment is too perfectly absurd not to document. Her next instinct is not embarrassment, but proof.

“My second thought was, ‘I have to show my husband,’ ” she says, explaining that describing it wouldn’t be enough. With a 14-hour flight to London ahead, she wants him to fully grasp the gravity — and humor — of traveling with two kids.

She pulls out her phone and records, later adding a caption that reads, “[Whose] bright idea was it to put the baby seat NEXT TO THE FLASHING BUTTON?? I need answers. And therapy.”

Comments began pouring in almost immediately, many from parents sharing their own public parenting mishaps. What starts as one awkward moment turns into a collective confession booth.

“So many parents have commented with their own embarrassing public stories,” Mya says, noting how comforting the response has been. For her, it’s a reminder that these moments, while exhausting, are also deeply unifying.

“If you don’t laugh, then you’d cry,” she says, explaining how humor helps her move through even the most chaotic days. No matter how tiring the moment, she always finds something to smile about by the end.

The TikTok also sparked widespread speculation about the restroom design itself. Viewers are especially fixated on the placement of the child seat next to such an irresistible button.

“There was also a lot of speculation on who on earth designed a child seat next to a red flashing button,” Mya says. She agrees that no toddler could ever resist pressing it.

Despite the brief panic, Mya says the trip overall reinforced how accommodating Japan is for families. The thoughtful design across public spaces made traveling with young children far more manageable than she expected.
