New convertible registrations in Germany continue to decline

Sales of convertibles in Germany continue to decline, with just 33,924 new registrations in 2025, down 17% from the year before, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

The 2024 figure had already marked a long-term low. Only one in 84 newly registered cars in Germany was a convertible.

The decline likely reflects a shift in lifestyle and consumer preferences. The sense of freedom that once boosted convertible demand has increasingly been taken over by SUVs, which have expanded their market share significantly in recent years.

At the same time, the number of models on offer has fallen sharply. Many brands no longer produce convertibles, while others offer only one or two models.

Volkswagen’s T-Roc was the best-selling convertible in Germany in 2025 with 8,179 units. BMW followed with 6,499, ahead of Mercedes with 4,951, Porsche’s 4,946 and Mini with 4,926. Together, these five brands accounted for around 87% of convertible sales.

Despite years of declining new registrations, about 2.2 million convertibles remain on German roads, often maintained as classic cars by their owners. The figure, as of January 1, 2025, has decreased slowly due to limited new supply and the total was around 24,000 higher a year earlier.
