The Real-Life Diet of Josh Segarra, Who Knew He Was Getting Older When He Hurt Himself Brushing His Teeth

I’m a mean breakfast maker. I love making pancakes for the boys. It’s definitely something that I enjoy doing because I also feel like it’s something I can do for my family. It’s important to me to find ways that I can take care of them. There are things that they love, man. My wife will make little protein balls and they love those. They think they’re candy. They’ll take them to school and find ways to sneak [them] in. They all love eggs, scrambled eggs, hard boiled eggs. That’s always a snack for them. We try to instill that in them. Keep it fun, let them enjoy themselves, but secretly start them off on the right foot.

It sounds like you’re doing a good job! Eggs are a tough sell for a lot of kids.

And I get it, right? They’re gooey, they’re kind of mushy. Literally just yesterday I was laughing about eggs because I was eating egg whites. My oldest was like, “What are egg whites?” I was explaining and he’s like, “I want egg whites.” I was like, “Let’s go! I’ll give you egg whites. Sure, man. Eat a whole plate of egg whites. Let’s get it, bro.”

It’s funny, man. I got a little gym set up in my house here. I love it when I’m in there and they’re in there with me. They love going in there. Now, all three of them at different times of the day will say, “Daddy, gym time.” I’m like, “You know what? Let’s go! Gym time.” I’ll be on the treadmill and I’ve got a little rack of weights in there. They pull out the five and the eight and the 10 and they’re flexing and curling.

It’s the same thing with food and fitness with them. I just want them to enjoy it as much as they can, and get those habits in there.

Has Hollywood changed the diet at all? Are you on green juice and açai bowls and everything like that?

No, man. I definitely love an açai bowl. But I’m picky about my açai bowl. I like it to be creamy. The creamier the better. If it’s too icy—I’ll eat it, don’t get me wrong—but I judge it if it’s a little too icy. I’ve got memories of specific açai bowls that I love. There’s a spot in Montreal, they probably have the best açai bowl I had in my life, man.

I got a local spot that I go to and I love it, man. That’s definitely one of my snacks. I don’t mind a green juice, man. It makes you feel good. A couple times I’ve done a juice cleanse. I had a friend that did it for three days. After a few days, I was like, “I’m good on this.”

What about supplements?

I try to keep that pretty simple, man. I take my men’s multivitamin every day. I take a little shot of my green powder, and then I take some creatine. I just started implementing creatine a few months ago, seeing all the studies popping up on that and seeing how that’s helping with brain function. But honestly, man, it just also makes me feel good in my body. Because the truth is, yes, sometimes you’re going shirtless and you’re figuring out all the ways that you need to get there. But most of the time, man, you’re not shirtless. You’re just in your own costume and you want to look right. You want to feel good. We’ve got long days, as I know you do, too. If you’re waking up groggy every day of your job, you’re not going to be functioning at your best. It’s just making sure that everything is right, that the brain is matching the body. That starts with your sleep, your diet, and your movement.

A lot of the roles that I’ve seen you in are very positive. I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but you seem very comfortable in your own skin, very at peace with who you are as a man. What is the key to that for you?

I try to keep this all really simple for myself. I try to quiet a lot of the noise. My business is filled with a lot of noise, and I try not to invite as much of that noise into my life. I try to keep what’s necessary here. What’s not necessary, I’m not letting it into my ether. My life is pretty simple, man. I’m a dad, I’m a husband, I’m a son, I’m a father, and I’m an actor. If it doesn’t fuel one of those, then really no room in my life for it.
