Since taking over the internet in late 2021, Wordle has done what few viral sensations have been able to. The lockdown pastime has remained hugely popular, and is still The New York Times’ most-played game.
The publication purchased Wordle from its creator, Josh Wardle, in January 2022 for a seven-figure sum, but the Brooklyn-based software engineer never meant for the word puzzle game to become a global hit.

Wardle created the game as a gift for his crossword-loving partner, based on a prototype he’d first experimented with in 2013. Realizing that other puzzle nerds might enjoy the game, he uploaded Wordle to the web. In November 2021, the game had 91 players. By January 2022, it had over 2 million.
Despite inventing Wordle, the developer told Newsweek he’s not the best player.
“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning. She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts,” he said in January 2022.
Wardle and his partner Palak Shah curated the original word bank of 2,315 possible answers. However, this doesn’t give them an advantage.
“When I designed the game, it was for me and my partner to enjoy, so I made sure that all of the entries were randomized,” he said. “In other words, I don’t actually know what tomorrow’s word is going to be, which means that I can take part like everybody else.”
